PUBLIC ART

Discover Public Art

Public art humanizes, invigorates and beautifies the built environment and public spaces.  In many cities, the placement of public art, starting small then growing, does all of these things, but also introduces and helps invite the conversation of the importance of arts and culture and in our community.

Wandering Line by Patrick Marold

Light Rail Station, 130th Ave NE & Spring Blvd

Patrick Marold's artwork is the stainless steel guardrail that surrounds most of the station platform with a gentle, wandering line. This meandering gesture moves gradually up and down, drawn by an unseen hand. The reflection of light and shadows changes depending on the time of day or season of the year, creating a dynamic visual experience for those waiting for the train or simply passing through. Four benches will punctuate the guardrail, each made from colored glass layered with stainless steel and lit subtly from below.

Statement from the Artist — “The project initially started with a series of hand drawn lines that embodied a sense of travel, and would become the basis for the sculptural component of the railings on each side of the track. The intention was to create a railing adhering to the limitations and requirements that insured safety and function, and I approached it as an opportunity to project a subtle and dynamic shadow composition on the concrete platform. While the wandering lines are visible in the physical railing itself, they are also cast onto the concrete surface with sunlight, changing through out the days and seasons.”

Artwork by Po Shu Wang

Light Rail Station, 130th Ave NE & Spring Blvd.

Title” Yonder Sky”, Po Shu Wang has created a site-specific artwork that relates to its Magnetic Declination of 15.66° E in the year of its conception. An Info plaque in front of the sculpture will invite the public to collaborate with the artwork to create a uniquely Bellevue musical composition in real time. A proximity sensor embedded at front of the sphere of the sculpture allows the public to place their hand over it and activate different layers of human vocals over the music. This artwork is slated for installation in late 2023 or early 2024.

MURAL by WILL SCHLOUGH

Near site of 130th Street Light Rail Station

The mural site is a unique low and long concrete wall along a busy BelRed corridor, adjacent to a pedestrian sidewalk and within view of the future Light Rail station. The wall presents a great opportunity to create a narrative based mural that adds energy and imagination to the streetscape to be enjoyed by pedestrians and drivers alike.

The goal of this design is to make clever use of the long wall, adding a playful transportation themed story to the site. The mural depicts a group of snails making use of a giant sling shot and ramp to quickly get around. The image’s movement and energy creates an impact that goes well beyond the square footage of the wall, asking viewers to imagine this snail flying through the sky and rolling to a stop somewhere far, far away.
